Chris Parisi’s Pick of The Week

Hachiya persimmons

While we spoke about fuyu fruits (sweet persimmons) last week, there is another equally common variety: hachiya persimmons! These ‘original’ persimmons are more heart-shaped than fuyu fruits, although they range in similar colours. It takes a little while longer for this variety to get really ripe - quite often they are consumed too early and the astringency doesn’t make for pleasant eating, which is why you often hear people complain about the taste of persimmons. Patience is a virtue when it comes to this delicious winter fruit - when the persimmon feels soft like an almost-filled water balloon, it’s perfect for eating.
